September grapes

The pungent yeasty smell of emptying wine barrels is in the air, as last years dregs are discarded.  The first grapes have been harvested in our area and the barrels have been cleaned and sterilised ready for this seasons vintage.

The weather forecast is for fair weather .  Temperatures have been high this last week.  The grapes are sweetening.  Inspections take place daily.  There is no rain on the horizon but the wasps and hornets are already enjoying that boozy sweetness and could ruin a good crop.




Vaso's family is gathering, first to pick the white grapes and about a week later, the red.  There is rebellion in the air this year.  Vaso is no longer supreme ruler.  She wants to wait another week, the 'childen' want to pick now.  One of them wants to go on holiday next week with his family and the other has a daughter returning to overseas study and wants to spend time with her.  They'll probably harvest towards the end of the week.

The grapes will picked in one morning, brought up to 'Estate Vaso'  on the back of the old farm 'ute' and must be pressed the next day.



Wine is very important to the Greeks.  Around here many households have a small piece of land where grape vines are lovingly cultivated, looked after  and harvested.  The grapes are made into wine for consumption by the family during the next year.



There was an extremely unpopular tax added to wine during the crisis.  The government is now promising to revoke the tax which has slowed sales and increased business on the black market.

Greeks have been drinking and trading in wine for over 4,000 years.   Scattered on the seabed around wrecks of ancient trading ships are always shards of the huge pottery amphora used to transport the wine.



Soon we'll all be high on the smell of fermenting juice as all our neighbours begin this years vintage.

  2. Here too there are many wineries in the area but they are more commercial and only few are family wineries.

    1. The grapes must be ready down in Israel. You get so much sunshine. I've never tried wine from Israel .

  4. Still a little way off yet here, but the harvest will be very small due to a late spring frost. Many vineyards will have NOTHING.

  6. I was on the island six years ago and was there for the first of the grapes to be crushed. Loved it.
    We grow moscato grapes and make moscato wine. And that's fine by me. It's my favourite!
    Nope it's a great year for wine!

  7. Linda wonder if you can help?.
    Trying to find flying dolphin timetables from Athens to Poros and return on same day in Nov. Not having much luck.
    Do you know website for busses from Athens to Poros?.
    Going round in circles. Bus is prob ruled out due to lack of time tho.
    Time is getting closer to paddling on Vagonia beach with a glass of barely wine, brolly, blanket and disposable BBQ.

    1. There are plenty of hydrofoils even in winter. The first one comes into porosity at about 9am and the last one in the winter leaves about 5 I think. They probably don't have their winter timetable up yet but it's the mostly the same each year.
      There are only two buses a day I think. Wouldn't be any good.
      Hire a car?

    2. Erm I would be a total liability and scared driving on Greek roads!๐Ÿ˜€.Driving out of airport no chance, would be so so wired to drive on wrong side of the road!.

    3. Arriving at 9 am would be perfect, water taxi to galatas coffee with Greek sesame circle bread, little walk about water taxi back to Poros. Wander around Poros stop for coffee n nibbles, visit butchers on harbour for lamb chops, find disposable bbq no idea where?. Get herbs n lemon n plastic bottle of wine, bread and tomatoes n lemon. Not being Greek need butter. Sorted !. Few hours Vagonia paddling and yep I,ve done it!. Then taxi back to Poros coffee then hydrofoil back to Attalos hotel in Athens.
      I am so time poor for now, but in a couple of years no!.

  8. Last resort would be hiring a driver for the day leaving Athens early returning late. Not feasible me thinks Poros driver as would be 4 journeys. But from Athens 2 then hang about time.

  9. No I,m not rich!. Just has been the carrot dangling for 6 years as I,ve lived the most frugal life. Mortgage gone.
    Vagonia beach whatever weather even for a few hours is the reward!. I actually don,t care about the weather just being there for a few hours even if wild weather looking at beautiful bay sorted!.

  11. Don't think askeli travel exists anymore. Everyone books online now. Last I heard of Nikos he was driving a taxi in Toronto.
    October, November, not sure what is still open.

  12. Oh sob Askelli travel is no longer!. Loved that he sorted everything!. Picked up in the most beat up car the world has seen ,taken to whatever apartment but was always lovely and with a hug and smile!๐Ÿ˜ฅ
